How do I create a video with 2D animation and 3D animation?
This step by step walk through will guide you through the production process so you understand how to go from the idea in your head to the final draft of your animation.
Step 1: Get A Quote
Start by contacting Video Igniter and any other other studio you’re considering to get a quote for your project.
Provide as many details as possible about your project so you can get an accurate quote for your video. Be sure to describe how much 2D animation and how much 3D animation you intend to include in your video.
Once you receive production quotes from each company, review their animation portfolios before making a final decision for your project. After you’ve made your selection, notify the studio. You will receive a production agreement to sign and an invoice for 50% of your production budget.
Step 2: Write The Script
The script for your animation acts like the skeleton for your whole project. It helps us organize your key messages into a story that resonates with your viewer.
You will receive a copy of the script to review with your team. Add your feedback to the document and we will integrate your revisions until you approve the script.
Step 3: Create The Storyboard
Next, we turn your script into a storyboard so we have a prescriptive blueprint that tells our production team exactly what to create in every scene.
You will receive a digital copy of the storyboard to review with your team. Add your comments to the storyboard and we will integrate your edits until everything is perfect.
Step 4: Create The Concept Art
You will receive multiple pieces of concept art from our art director. Let the art director know which concept is your favorite. If you’d like, you can collaborate with the art director to revise and refine your favorite concept until it looks perfect.
Step 5: Create The Illustrations & 3D Models
After the concept art is approved, our 2D animation and 3D animation teams will independently begin work on their respective parts of production.
The 2D animation team will create all of the illustrations for your video and give you a chance to review the art and request revisions before they start animating.
The 3D animation team will start by creating black and white 3D models for your video. You will get an opportunity to review the shape and form of the models so you can make revisions to how they look. After the 3D forms are approved, we’ll add color, textures and lighting to your models so they look the way they will appear in your video. You get another opportunity at this point to review all the models and request edits before approving them for production.
Step 6: Produce The VoiceOver
You will receive multiple voiceover auditions for your animation. Give them a listen and let us know which one is your favorite. We’ll hire that person to record the full narration for your animation. You will get a chance to listen to the full recording and request edits (if needed) before we use the narration to create your animation.
Step 7: Select Music
Our audio team will select a handful of soundtracks that can be used to enhance the presentation of key moments in your animation. Give them a listen and let us know which one is your favorite. We will take care of acquiring the appropriate license(s) so we can legally use the music in your animation.
Step 8: Produce The Animation
Now that everything is approved, we can animate your video! The 2D animation team and 3D animation teams will initially work independently to create their respective parts of the animation. As soon as each team completes their work, you will receive the first draft of the 2D animation and the 3D animation. Give them each a detailed review and let us know if there are any revisions you want us to address. After both parts are approved, we will integrate your 2D animation with the 3D animation to finalize your video.
You will receive the unwatermarked version of your animation after you pay the final invoice for your production budget.
What does it cost to make a video that uses 2D animation and 3D animation?
First, let’s break down the difference between 2D animation costs and 3D animation costs. Then we’ll discuss how much it costs to create a video with 2D animation and 3D animation.
2D Animation Costs
If you were going to create a video that only uses 2D animation, the price per minute is usually between $1,500 and $7,500. If you want to use high end traditional animation that’s drawn by hand, the price per minute is usually over $10,000.
3D Animation Costs
3D animation costs can start as low as $5,000 for 60 seconds worth of video but your production budget will more likely be above $10,000 for each minute of content we create. To put this into perspective, a 90 minute 3D animated PIXAR film costs over $100,000,000 to produce. That’s over $1,000,000 to create each minute of the movie!
2D and 3D Animation Costs
If you want to create a video that combines 2D and 3D animation, here two scenarios that will help you estimate the budget range for your project.
Scenario 1: 50% 2D Animation and 50% 3D Animation
Let’s say you want to create a video that includes 30 seconds of 2D animation and 30 seconds of 3D animation. To estimate your production budget, take the estimated cost for a minute of 2D animation ($1,500-$7,500) and divide it by two to get the estimated budget range for 30 seconds of 2D animation ($750-$3,750). Now do the same thing with 3D animation – take the estimated cost for a minute of 3D animation ($10,000+) and divide it by two to get the estimated cost for 30 seconds of 3D animation ($5,000 or more).
Add the two together and you get an estimated budget range of $5,750-$8,750+ for a 60-second animation that is 50% 2D animation and 50% 3D animation.
Scenario 2: 2D Animation With 3D Animation On Top
Let’s say you want to create a 60-second 2D animation video that also includes some 3D animations overlaid on top of the 2D animation. First, estimate how many seconds of 3D animation will be added on top of the animation. For this example, let’s say there will be 20 seconds of 3D animation in total. The 3D animation cost will be 1/3 of the estimated cost of a minute’s worth of 3D animation – so 1/3 of $10,000 = $3,333.33. Next, pull up the estimated cost for 60 seconds worth of 2D animation ($1,500-$7,500 -> or $10,000+ if you want to create traditional hand drawn animation). Add the estimated cost for 2D animation and the estimated cost for 3D animation to get the estimated budget range for your project: $1,500-$7,500 + $3,333.33 = $4,833.33-$10,833.33.

How long does it take to create a video with 2D and 3D animation?
There’s a handful of variables that will affect how long it will take to create your animation. This breakdown will help you estimate how long it will take to create your video.
2D Animation Production Timeline
2D animation takes less time to create than 3D animation. A 60-second animation usually takes 4-8 weeks to produce. If your video uses fancy hand drawn animation, it may take an additional 2-4 weeks to complete your video.
3D Animation Production
3D animation takes 2-3x more time to create than 2D animation. We’ll start production on the 2D and 3D parts of your animation at the same time but the 3D components may take a few more weeks to finish – depending on the length and complexity of the content we create. If the 3D components are minimal, we may be able to finish the 3D animation before the 2D parts are complete.
Combining 2D and 3D Animation
As soon as the 2D and the 3D parts of your animation are complete and approved by you, we will integrate the two together. This phase of production should only take a few hours or days depending on the complexity of the integration.

2D & 3D Animation Budget Saving Tips

1). Write The Script
Writing the script for your project can save you $500 off the cost of each minute of video we create for you. Download our free script writing template to get started.
2). Record The VoiceOver
We can deduct the cost of hiring a voiceover artist if you want to record the narration yourself. Watch 1:31 in this video to see how you can record professional quality voiceovers for free.
3). Find Free Legal Music
If you source free music that we can legally use in your video, we can deduct the cost of buying soundtrack licenses from your production budget. Check sites like Incompetech and Facebook’s Sound Collection for free, royalty-free tracks we can use in your video.
4). Create The Storyboard
Creating the storyboard for your video can save you an additional $500 off the cost of each minute of video we create for you. Download our free storyboard template and review the included storyboard creation guide for tips to help you get started.
5). Minimize The Use of 3D Animation
This is kind of an obvious one but it’s worth mentioning. 3D animation is expensive. By minimizing the use of 3D animation and relying more on 2D animation, you can probably lower your overall production budget by $1,000 or more.
6). Start Production ASAP
The easiest thing you can do to save 10%-50% or more off your production budget is to start making your video as soon as possible. Quality animation (especially 3D animation) takes time to create. You can pay extra to speed up the production process for your upcoming deadline but it can easily add 10%-50% or more to the final production budget.
We recommend starting production as soon as possible to avoid or minimize paying for rush delivery. Send us a message or schedule a call to start discussing your 2D and 3D animation project today.
