How long does it take to make a video with a motion graphics designer?

Simple motion graphics that are created and overlaid on top of existing video footage can be made in as little as a few hours or a few days. However, in many cases, it can take a week or two to do all the design and prep work to ensure the motion graphics designer is creating the right content and doing so in a way that visually compliments your brand.

If you want to hire a motion graphics designer to create a complete animated video, expect it to take 2-5 weeks to create a 60 second custom animated motion graphic. Motion graphics that include 3D animation can take 2-4x more time to produce.

What is the production process like working with a motion graphics designer?

Here’s a quick overview of the production process so that you can anticipate what’s involved with creating a custom animated motion graphic:

1). Kickoff Call / Questionnaire

Production begins with a phone call and or a questionnaire to help us learn:

✅ What visual style you want to use for your motion graphic?

✅ What do you want to convey with your motion graphic?

2). Script / Outline

Now that we have a better understanding of the motion graphic you want us to create, our motion graphic designer will draft a script or an outline that describes what we’re going to create. If your motion graphic is purely visual, there will be no script, just visual descriptions of what we plan to create. If your motion graphic will also have a voiceover, we will draft a script for you to review.

Share your feedback with us and we will revise your script / outline until you are thrilled with it.

3). Storyboard

Once the script/outline is locked in, our motion graphics designer will create a storyboard. A storyboard is a visual blueprint for your motion graphic that explains to the illustrator and animator what they’re supposed to create.

Give the storyboard a detailed review and ensure it includes enough detail for the production team to understand what needs to be included in the visuals for each scene.

We’ll incorporate your feedback and continue to work with you to refine the storyboard until it’s perfect.

4). VoiceOver (Optional)

Not all motion graphics include a voiceover so this step may be omitted. If a voiceover is needed for your motion graphic, we will share some voiceover auditions for you to review. Let us know which voiceover artist resonates with you. Then we’ll oversee the recording of the full voiceover.

You get an opportunity to review the voiceover and request revisions until you love the recording.

5). Illustrations

Next, the motion graphics designer will develop custom concept art for you to review.

Let the motion graphics designer know which concept you like best. Then you can collaborate with them to refine the visual concept to dial in the details until they’re perfect.

Once the concept art is locked in, we will create all of the rest of the custom graphics for your motion graphic. You get an opportunity to review the graphics and request revisions before approving the art for production.

6). Soundtrack (Optional)

Not all motion graphics include soundtracks so this step may be omitted. If your motion graphic is going to include background music, we will select a few options and share them with you to review. Let us know which soundtrack you prefer and we’ll license it for use in your animated motion graphic. If you aren’t in love with any of the soundtrack options, let us know why and we’ll source new options for you to consider.

7). Animation

Now that everything is approved, the motion graphics designer can animate your project! You will receive the first draft as soon as it’s ready to review. Share the draft with members of your internal team (and ideally members of your target audience). Send everyone’s feedback to us. We’ll incorporate your revisions and render out the final draft of your motion graphic.
