Here are some additional resources to help you find and hire a 2D animation studio for your project:

How to work with a studio to create a 2D animation?

2d animation studio create video

Creating a 2D animation video is a collaborative process. You will provide information to the production team. They will create part of your video (script, storyboard, voiceover, soundtrack, illustrations, & animation). You will get a chance to review it and ask for revisions. The 2D animation studio will address your revision requests and send the file(s) back to you to review and approve so that production can move to the next stage of the video production workflow.

Questionnaire / Phone Call

Production typically starts with a digital questionnaire and or a to learn about what you want to communicate in your video. It also gives the 2D animation team an opportunity to learn about what kind of animated visual style will resonate best with your target audience.

2D animation questionnaire

Script

The animation studio will review the information from the call/questionnaire and use it to develop the first draft of your video script. It may include notes [in brackets like this] to suggest what visuals should correspond with each part of the script.

When you review your script, focus on the message that is being presented. Does the voiceover/narration communicate all the main talking points? Does it do so in a way that appeals to your target audience?

If you have any revision requests, send them to the 2D animation studio to revise. Otherwise, let them know it’s approved so production can move forward!

Storyboard

Now that your script is production-ready, the 2D animation team will develop your storyboard. The storyboard is the blueprint for your 2D animated video. It tells the illustrators what to create. It also tells the animators how to make the visuals move.

When you review your storyboard, your feedback should focus on the visuals that are going to be created in each scene. Make sure each one makes sense. Ensure enough detail is included in the description so that the 2D animation studio knows what to create. If certain details need to be shown a specific way, say so. Otherwise, you are providing space for the animated video production company to create their own execution.

If you love the storyboard as-is, let the 2D animation team know it’s approved. Otherwise, send them your feedback so they can incorporate your edits.

VoiceOver

voiceover

Once your storyboard is approved, the animation studio will help audition voiceover artists for your 2D animated video. You will hear audition recordings from one or more artists for each voice in your video. Let the 2D animation studio know which audition(s) you like best and they will hire them to record the full voiceovers. If you aren’t satisfied with any of the auditions, let your production team know why so they can source better options.

You will get an opportunity to review your voiceover and request revisions before approving it for production.

Soundtrack

soundtrack

Your production team will also select some soundtracks to enhance the presentation of your animation. If you love one of the options, let the 2D animation studio know. Not a fan of any of the options? Let them know why so they can select better options for you to review. Can’t decide which one you like best? Tell your production team and they can help you preview them when the first draft of your animation is ready to review.

Illustrations

Art creation begins after your storyboard is approved. The art director will review your brand guidelines, style references and storyboard. Then, they will select a key scene from your storyboard and design it using one or more unique visual styles.

concept art

Let the 2D animation studio know how you feel about each of the concepts. They will use that info to refine the visual style until you are thrilled with it.

Then, they will create all of the illustrations for your video using the concept art as a style reference.

2d animation studio illustrations

Share your feedback and let the 2D animation studio know if they need to make any modifications to any of the illustrations. Otherwise, let them know it’s good to go so that animation can begin.

Animation

Animation takes about 1 week for each minute of content that is being created. Detailed frame by frame animations may require more time to produce. Animation timelines can be speed up with larger budgets. The extra funds go to towards putting additional animators and project managers on the project.

When the first draft is ready, review the animation with your internal team and members of your target audience (if available).

Collect everyone’s feedback and send it to the 2D animation studio so they can incorporate the last edits and deliver the final draft.

DIY vs. Professional 2D Animation Studios: What’s Right for You?

DIY vs. Professional 2D Animation Studios

If you’re considering creating your animated video in-house using online tools or apps, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons.

DIY Tools (e.g., Vyond, Animaker, Canva):

  • ✅ Lower cost
  • ✅ Fast turnaround
  • ✅ Easy to use
  • ❌ Limited creative control
  • ❌ Templates can look generic
  • ❌ Often lacks polish for professional marketing

  • ✅ Custom design tailored to your brand
  • ✅ Professional scriptwriting and voiceover
  • ✅ High production value
  • ✅ Greater storytelling depth
