2). Script

how to make a video with a studio script

The script is the first deliverable our studio creates for your video project. Our writers will connect with you virtually to learn:

  • What you want to communicate in your video?
  • Who your target audience is?
  • What problems your audience experiences?
  • What you want your viewers to do when they’re done watching your video?

These questions help our writers develop a video script that conveys your key talking points to your target audience in a compelling way that motivates them to take action when they’re done watching your video.

You will receive a digital copy of the script to review with your team. We invite members of your team to add their feedback directly on the script document. Then, our writers will revise the script and share the 2nd draft with you to review and approve.

If additional edits are needed, we will continue to work with you to revise and polish your script until you love it.

3). Storyboard

how to make a video with a studio storyboard

The next deliverable our studio creates for your video is the storyboard. The storyboard functions like a blueprint for your video so our producers know what to create. Each page of the storyboard includes:

  • A sentence from your script.
  • A mockup or sketch of the scene.
  • Bullet point instructions that explain how elements will move throughout the scene.

When the first draft is ready, you will receive a digital copy of the storyboard to review with your team. We invite you to add your comments and revision requests directly on the storyboard.

After you submit your revisions, our storyboard artists will integrate your revisions and then share the 2nd draft of the storyboard with you to review and approve. If additional edits are needed, we will continue to work with you to revise and polish your storyboard until it’s perfect.

4). VoiceOver

voiceover

Our studio’s audio team will select a handful of voiceover options for your video. Give them a listen and let us know which option is your favorite.

We will hire that person to record the full narration and coach them through the proper pacing, tone and energy they should use.

You will receive a copy of the full recording to listen to so you can request edits before we use the audio to make your video.

5). Soundtrack

soundtrack

You will also receive a selection of handpicked soundtrack options for your video. Give them a listen and let us know which option is your favorite. Our studio will take care of acquiring the appropriate license(s) so we can legally use the music when we make your video.

6). Illustrations

Video Igniter’s art director will review your brand guidelines and any style refernces you may have shared. Then, they will create concept art based on scenes from your storyboard using one or more original visual styles.

how to make a video for a studio concept art

When you review the concept art, it’s important that you share your honest feedback with our studio about what you like and dislike about each concept. This way, the art director can revise and polish your favorite visual concept until you love it.

After the concept art is approved, the art director will oversee our studio’s team of illustrators while they create all of the custom illustrations for your video. The art director will ensure the illustrators design the art to match the style of the approved concept art. When all of the art is ready, you will get an opportunity to review all of the illustrations and request revisions before we make your video.

7). Animation

how to make a video with a studio animator

Now that everything has been approved, it’s time for our studio to make your video!

Our animators will line up the illustrations so they appear in sync with the timing of the voiceover. Then, they will add motion design to all of the scenes based on the instructions we created in the storyboard.

When the first draft is ready, you will receive a watermarked version of the video to review. We invite you to share the video with your internal team and members of your target audience to collect a wide range of feedback. After you consolidate your revision requests, send them over to us. Our studio will revise your video and render out the 2nd draft for you to review and approve.

Once your video receives final approval, our studio will take an extra day or two to add subtle sound effects and to balance and master the audio levels between the voiceover, soundtrack and sound effects so everything sounds loud and clear.

You will be able to download the final unwatermarked version of your animation after final payment is completed for your project.

How much does it cost to make a video with a studio?

how to make a video with a studio cost

Production costs vary widely based on the style of animation that’s being produced.

In general, most forms of 2D animation can be produced for a cost of $1,750-$7,500 for each minute of video content the studio makes for you. High end forms of 2D animation (also known as hand drawn animation) can cost 2x-4x more than this.

3D animation is more labor intensive than 2D animation. Some 3D animation projects may cost as little as $5,000 for a 60-second video. In most cases, your 3D animation budget is likely to be within the $10,000-$50,000 range to create each minute of content.

To put this into perspective, the average PIXAR film costs over $1,000,000 to produce each minute of the film.

How To Make A 3D Animation With Video Igniter

Video Igniter will guide you through these 8 steps to turn your ideas into a custom designed 3D animation.

1). Get A Quote

3d animation quote

Before production begins, our team will work with you virtually to learn about the 3D animation you want to create. To get in touch with our team, send us a message or schedule a call. Our team will ask you questions like:

  • What kind of 3D animation do you want us to create?
  • How will the 3D animation be used?
  • What do you want us to show in your 3D animation?
  • When do you need the final draft completed by?

After we learn about the 3D animation you want us to create, our team will develop a production proposal and budget for your project. Once we agree to the scope and budget for the project, you will receive a production contract to sign and an invoice for the first 50% of your production budget.

2). Script

3d animation script

Now that production is underway, Video Igniter’s writers will develop the script for your 3D animation. Our writers will connect with you virtually to learn the following types of information:

  • Who is your target audience?
  • What problems do they experience?
  • What key messages do you want to include in your video?
  • What do you want people to do when they’re done watching your 3D animation?

These questions enable our writers to develop a script for your 3D animation that conveys your key talking points to your target audience in a way that resonates with them and inspires them to take action when they’re done watching your video.

When the first draft of your script is ready, you will receive a digital copy to review with your team. Have your team add their comments directly on the script document and let us know when all of the feedback has been submitted. Then, our writers will revise the script and share the 2nd draft with you to review and approve.

If additional edits are needed, our writers will continue to work with you to revise and polish your script until you love it.

3). Storyboard

3d animation storyboard

Next, we turn your script into a storyboard. The storyboard functions like a blueprint for your 3D animation; it is a set of instructions that the animators and artists use so they know what to create for all of the scenes in your 3D animation. Each page of the storyboard includes:

  • A sentence from your script.
  • A sketch or mockup of the scene.
  • Bullet point instructions that describe the motion that will happen in the scene.

When you review the first draft of the storyboard, help us understand if we’ve included all of the important visual details that need to be shown in your 3D animation. If there is something we left out, let us know so we can add documentation; otherwise the animators and 3D modelers won’t know to add those specific details when they create your 3D animation.

After all of your feedback is sent to us, our storyboard artists will integrate your feedback and then share the 2nd draft of your storyboard for you to review and approve. If additional edits are needed, let us know and we’ll continue to work with you revise your storyboard until everything looks just right!

4). VoiceOver

voiceover

Video Igniter’s audio team will hand pick a selection of voiceover artists for your 3D animation. Give the auditions a listen and let us know which option is your favorite. We’ll hire the voiceover artist and coach them through the voiceover recording to ensure they use the proper tone & energy for the recording. When the full voiceover is ready, you will get an opportunity to listen to the recording and request edits before we use the audio to create your video.

5). Soundtrack

soundtrack

You will also receive a selection of soundtrack options for your 3D animation. Give them a listen and let us know which option is your favorite. We’ll acquire the appropriate license(s) so we can legally use the music when we create your 3D animation.

6). Concept Art

3d animation concept art

Before we create all of the 3D models for your 3D animation, our art director will create multiple pieces of concept art. Video Igniter’s art director will review your brand guidelines and any style references you may have shared. Then, the art director will design multiple pieces of concept art based off scenes from your storyboard.

When you review the concept art, share your honest feedback. Let us know what you like and dislike about each concept. This way, the art director can revise and polish your favorite concept until it’s perfect.

7). Create 3D Models

After the concept art is approved, Video Igniter’s 3D modelers will create 3D models for every object, character and piece of scenery that will be featured in your 3D animation. At first, all of the 3D models will look black and white, like this:

3d animation model

When you review the models the first time, the goal is to help us refine the shape and form of each object. If we left out physical details, let us know so we can add them now.

After the 3D models are approved, our art team will add color, lighting and shading to every 3D model. You will get an opportunity to review the colorized models and request edits before we animate your video.

8). Animation

3d animation animator

Now that everything is approved, we can create your 3D animation!

Video Igniter’s animators will organize all of the 3D models to create each scene. Then, they will line up the scenes with the timing of the voiceover so everything appears in sync with the narration. Then, the animators will apply animation to the moving elements so your animation comes to life.

When the first draft is ready, you will receive a link to download a watermarked copy of your 3D animation. Share the video with your internal team and members of your target audience to get a wide range of feedback for your 3D animation. After you consolidate the feedback, send it to us so we can revise your 3D animation. After the edits are integrated, you will receive the 2nd draft of your 3D animation to review and approve.

Once the 3D animation gets your approval, our audio team will spend an extra day or two adding subtle sound effects to your 3D animation. We will also master the audio levels between the voiceover, soundtrack and sound effects so everything sounds loud and clear.

You will be able to download the final, unwatermarked version of your 3D animation after you pay the final invoice for your project.

How much does it cost to make a 3D animation?

3d animation cost

Most 3D animation projects cost between $5,000-$25,000 to create each minute of video content. High end forms of 3D animation can easily cost $50,000 or more to create each minute of animation.

To put this into context, a 90 minute PIXAR animated film costs +$100,000,000 to make. This breaks down to a cost of over $1,000,000 to create each minute of video. Thankfully, independent animation companies like Video Igniter are much more affordable to work with ;)

How much does it cost to make animated educational videos?

animated educational videos cost

2D animated educational videos typically cost between $1,750-$7,500 to create each minute of animation – depending on the complexity and style of animation we create. Typically, animated educational videos are on the lower end of this scale because companies generally don’t pay extra for high end design when their goal is to create content that is highly educational.

If you opt to use 3D animation for your videos, your budget might be 2x-4x larger, depending on the complexity of the animation you want us to create.

How to make a frame by frame animation with Video Igniter

When you’re ready to make a frame by frame animation, Video Igniter will guide you through these 7 steps to turn your idea into a custom animated video.

1). Get In Touch To Get A Quote

frame by frame animation get a quote

Before we start making your video, get in touch with us by scheduling a call with our production team or sending us a message. This gives us an opportunity to learn about the frame by frame animation you want us to create. We’ll meet with you virtually or send you questions via email to figure out the scope of the project.

Once we agree to the scope of the project, you will receive a production agreement to sign and an invoice for 50% of your production budget.

2). Script

frame by frame animation script

Now that production is underway, our writers will develop the script for your frame by frame animation. In order to help us write the script, our writers will meet with you virtually or send you a list of questions to learn the following information:

  • Who is your target audience?
  • What problems do they experience?
  • What key messages do you want to convey?
  • After people watch your animation, what do you want them to do?

With this information in hand, our writers will write the first draft of your video’s script. You will receive a link to a digital copy of the script which you can review with your team and members of your target audience. We recommend using the comments feature to add your feedback directly on the digital script document.

Once all the feedback is in, our writers will revise your script according to the feedback and then send you the 2nd draft to review and approve. If additional edits are needed, our writers will continue to work with you to revise and polish your script until it’s perfect.

3). Storyboard

frame by frame animation storyboard

Next, we turn your script into a storyboard. The storyboard functions like the blueprint for your frame by frame animation. Each page includes:

  • A sentence from your script.
  • A mockup of the scene.
  • Bullet point instructions that describe how elements will move in each scene.

When the storyboard is ready, you will receive a link to view a digital copy of the storyboard that you and your team can add comments on. After all the revision notes are in, our team will revise the storyboard and share the 2nd draft with you to review and approve.

If additional edits are needed, our team will work with you to update the storyboard until you love it.

4). VoiceOver

voiceover

You will receive a hand-picked list of voiceover auditions for your frame by frame animation. Give them listen and let us know which one is your favorite. We will hire that voiceover artist and coach them through the tone and energy they should use for the recording. We will also take care of acquiring the appropriate licenses so we can legally use the recording in your animation.

When the full recording is ready, you will get a chance to listen to it and request edits before we use it to make your animation.

5). Soundtrack

soundtrack

You will also receive a selection of hand-picked soundtracks that will enhance the presentation of key moments in your frame by frame animation. Give them a listen and let us know which option is your favorite. We will take care of acquiring the appropriate licenses so we can legally use the music in your video.

6). Illustrations

frame by frame animation concept art

Now it’s time to create the art for your frame by frame animation. Video Igniter’s art director will review your brand guidelines and any style references you may have shared. Then they will select a few key scenes from your storyboard and design custom concept art based on those scenes.

When you review the concept art, it’s important to share your honest opinions. Let the art director know what you like and dislike about each concept. This way the art director can work with you to polish and perfect your favorite piece of concept art.

frame by frame animation illustrator

Once you approve the concept art, the art director will oversee a team of illustrators while they turn the keyframes in your storyboard into art that matches the style of the concept art. You will be given an opportunity to review all of the illustrations and request revisions before we animate your video.

7). Animation

frame by frame animation

After everything gets your approval, it’s time to create your frame by frame animation.

Video Igniter’s animators will line up all of the illustrations so they are synced up with the timing of the voiceover. Then, they will individually draw all of the animation frames that happen in between the key frames. This is what makes your animation come to life!

This process can take several weeks, depending on the complexity of your animation.

When the first draft is ready, you will receive a link to download a watermarked copy of your frame by frame animation. We invite you to share the animation with your team and members of your target audience so that you get a wide range of feedback. After you’ve organized all the feedback, send it our way, and we will integrate your revisions.

Once you approve the animation, our sound team will take an additional day or two to add subtle sound effects and to balance the audio levels between the voiceover soundtrack and sound effects so that everything sounds loud and clear.

You will be able to download the unwatermarked version of your frame by frame animation after you pay the final invoice for your project.

What makes frame by frame animation different from other forms of animation?

frame by frame animation example

Frame by frame animation is the original form of animation. Traditionally, frame by frame animation was created by individually drawing each frame of the animation (12-30 frames per second of video).

Animators still draw each frame individually to create ultra smooth looking movements – but now a days, animators do most of the drawing on computers and tablets instead of paper. This provides many technological and production advantages which help animators do a better job in less time (compared to drawing on paper).

Frame by frame animation is also referred to as:

Cel Animation

Traditional Animation

Hand Drawn Animation

How much does it cost to make a frame by frame animation?

frame by frame animation cost

Frame by frame projects tend to start at a rate of $6,000-$7,500/minute of content but they’re more likely to be north of $10,000 per minute.

To put this into context, the animation cost for an episode of The Simpsons ranges between $10,000-$25,000 for each minute of the show. This doesn’t factor in the costs associated with writing the show or paying the voice actors.

  • What visual style we should use to create your animation?

Once we agree to the scope of your project, you will receive a production contract to sign and an invoice for 50% of your production budget.

2). Script

animated business video script

With the contract signed and the production deposit paid, it’s time to start developing the script for your animated business video. Our writers will meet with you virtually to learn:

  • Who your target audience is.
  • The problems they experience.
  • What key messages you want to communicate to them.
  • And what you want them to do when they’re done watching your animated business video.

Our writers will use this information to develop the first draft of the script for your business video. When the first draft is ready, you will receive a digital copy of the script to review with your team.

We invite your team to add their comments directly on the script document. After all the feedback is in, we’ll integrate your revisions and develop the 2nd draft for your animation. If any further revisions are needed, our writers will continue to work with you to revise your script until you love it.

3). Storyboard

animated business video storyboard

Next, we turn your script into a storyboard. The storyboard functions like a blueprint for your animated business video. Each page of the storyboard includes:

  • A sentence from your script.
  • A rough sketch or mock up of the scene.
  • Instructions that explain how things will move in the scene.

After we create the first draft of your storyboard, we will send you a digital copy of the document to review with your team. Give it a thorough review with your team to ensure we captured all of the important details that need to be shown in your video. If we need to add more visual details, let us know so we can properly document them in the storyboard.

Once we get your feedback, our storyboard artists will revise the storyboard and share the 2nd draft with you to review and approve. If additional edits are needed, we’ll continue to work with you to revise and polish your storyboard until it’s perfect.

4). VoiceOver

voiceover

You will receive a selection of voiceover auditions for your animated business video. Give them a listen and let us know which option is your favorite. We’ll hire that person to record the full voiceover narration and we’ll acquire the appropriate license(s) so we can legally use the recording when we animate your video. You will get an opportunity to listen to the audio and request edits, if needed.

5). Soundtrack

soundtrack

You will also receive a selection of soundtrack options for your animated business video. Give them a listen and let us know which one has the right tone and feeling for your brand. We’ll take care of acquiring the appropriate license(s) so we can legally use the music in your animated business video.

6). Illustrations

Time to create the art for your video! This process happens in two phases. First, we’ll create concept art to develop the visual style and then we’ll create all of the illustrations so they match the style of the concept art.

animated business video concept art

Video Igniter’s art director will review your brand guidelines and any style references you may have shared. Then, they’ll select a few key scenes from your storyboard and use them to create multiple pieces of concept art for your animated business video.

When you review the visual concepts, be sure to share your honest feedback with the art director. Let the art director know what you like and dislike about each visual concept. This way, the art director can polish and perfect your favorite visual concept.

After the concept art is locked in, the art director will lead the team of illustrators to create all of the art for your animated business video so that it looks like the approved concept art. You will get an opportunity to review all of the art and request revisions before we animate your video.

7). Animation

animated business video animation

Now that everything is approved, it’s time to animate your video!

The animator will line up all of the illustrations so they sync up with the voiceover narration. Then, they’ll apply animation to all of the art according to the instructions we documented in the storyboard. The process takes about 1 week for each minute of video we create for you.

When the first draft is ready, you will receive a link to download a copy of your animated business video. Share the video with your team and members of your target audience. After you collect everyone’s feedback, send it our way. We’ll integrate your revisions and render out the 2nd draft of your animation.

Once we get your approval on the animation, our sound team will take an extra day or two to add subtle sound effects to the video. They will also master and balance the audio levels between the sound effects, voiceover and soundtrack so that everything sounds loud and clear.

You will be able to download the final, unwatermarked version of your animated business video after you pay the final invoice for your project budget.

2D Vs 3D Animation

2D Vs 3D Animation

If you’re planning a new animated video for your company and you’re trying to decide if you should use 2D vs 3D animation, you’re in the right place!

This guide will help you understand the differences between using 2D vs 3D animation for your next video project. We’ll answer popular questions like:

  • When should I use 2D vs 3D animation for my video?
  • What is the cost difference between 2D vs 3D animation?
  • How long does it take to make 2D animation vs 3D animation?
  • When might I want to use a mix of 2D animation and 3D animation?

Ready? Let’s dive in:

When should I use 2D vs 3D animation?

2d vs 3d animation

2D animation and 3D animation have their own unique strengths and drawbacks depending on the type of content you want to create. Most animations are either created for a business purpose (promotions & advertising), educational purposes (classes & customer education) or for an entertaining purpose (movies & TV shows).

Here, we’ll explore the pros and cons of 2D vs 3D animation for each of these use cases to help you decide which style of animation is right for your video’s goals.

2D vs 3D Animation For Business Videos

2d vs 3d animation business video

Animated videos for your business are typically created to help the business increase awareness, generate leads, close sales and educate customers about how to use the product or service they purchased.

Businesses typically make purchasing decisions based on their ROI (return on investment). Because of this, most business videos are made with 2D animation because they cost less to produce which means they can deliver a higher ROI.

Example:

Let’s say your company spends $1,000 on a 2D animation and $1,000 to promote the video (campaign total cost = $2,000). If this campaign generates 5 sales worth $2,000 each ($10,000 total), your ROI is 500%. Excellent results!

Now, let’s say instead of spending $1,000 on a 2D animation, your company decides to spend $4,000 on a fancy 3D animation and $1,000 to promote the video (campaign total cost = $5,000). Hypothetically, if that campaign generates 5 sales worth $2,000 each ($10,000 in total), your ROI is only 200%. Your company still makes money, but they could have generated the same amount of sales by only spending $1,000 on the video and $1,000 promoting it ($8,000 profit) vs spending $4,000 on a video and $1,000 to promote it ($5,000 profit).

This is a very basic example but it’s common practice to evaluate business results based on the financial outcomes of a campaign. Creativity certainly plays a factor which can increase the campaign’s ROI but that’s separate from the monetary value and the time spent creating a 2D vs 3D animation.

There are exceptions to this guideline. Primarily, if your company needs to use 3D animation to visualize something that you can’t show using 2D animation (i.e. a hardware demo or physical process), then it’s likely worth it to spend the extra money to create a 3D animation so your target audience can visualize the details they need to see to understand your product/service/solution.

2D vs 3D Animation For Educational Videos

2d vs 3d animation educational video

If you’re making animated educational videos, the decision to use 2D vs 3D animation often comes down to whether the concept you are teaching can be produced using 2D or 3D animation. Whenever possible, use 2D animation to keep costs low. That being said, one of the remarkable advantages of animation is that it can be used to show and explain things that are difficult to understand or difficult to film. If 3D animation is the only way to show what you want to show, use 3D animation.

2D vs 3D Animation For Entertaining Videos

When it comes to make entertaining content, you have a lot more creative freedom in the choice to use 2D vs 3D animation. Budget is certainly a concern but if you are creating videos or movies to entertain people, higher production value is often rewarded with higher engagement and more paying viewers.

2d vs 3d animation entertaining video

If you’re creating an animated video for social media, 2D animation is often the route you want to go because there is still some sort of business ROI attached to the media asset. Sure, 3D animation can be used to create something truly captivating that takes off on social media, but it’s a lot of money to spend on a one-off short video that could quickly get buried in the ocean of online content.

On the flip side, if you’re producing a full length movie that people are paying to see, spending money on a higher production budget means you’ll end up with a higher quality video that people will be more likely to pay to watch.

What is the cost difference between 2D vs 3D animation?

2d vs 3d animation cost

TL;DR: 3D animation costs about 2x-4x more to produce than 3D animation.

In general, most forms of 2D animation can be produced for $1,750-$7,500 for each minute of content that’s being produced. Hand drawn animation also known as Cel Animation or Frame by Frame Animation can cost between $10,000-$25,000+ to animate each minute of footage.

3D animation on the other hand tends to start at $10,000 to create each minute of footage and can easily go up to $25,000-$50,000 to create each minute of video when you hire an independent studio like Video Igniter to make your animation. To put this into perspective, the average PIXAR film costs over $100,000,000 to produce, meaning each minute of the film costs over $1,000,000 to create.

If you’re looking for a quote to make a custom animated video, here are 4 ways Video Igniter can help you generate a quote:

1). Schedule a call with our production team.

2). Send us a message with details about the animation you want us to create.

3). Fill out this digital questionnaire about your video.

4). Request access to our pricing page.

How long does it take to make 2D animation vs 3D animation?

2d animation vs 3d animation production timeline

If we’re just talking about short 60-second long animations, it typically takes about 4-6 weeks to create a 2D animation. Hand drawn 2D animation and 3D animation take about 8-12 weeks to create a 60-second animation.

If you need to speed up the production process, send us a message and ask us about rush delivery animation.

When might I want to use a mix of 2D animation and 3D animation?

Unless you’re making a PIXAR style film or short video, there’s a good chance you can get a lot of cost savings by using a mix of 2D animation and 3D animation.

2d vs 3d animation uses

Let’s say you’re in charge of producing a video for your company to show how an engine works. 3D animation is a great way to show how the engine works and what all the parts look like. However, the entire video doesn’t need to be made using 3D animation. You might also have a title scene that’s just 2D text on screen introducing the engine. There might be another scene that uses icons to highlight the unique benefits of your engine ($ signs to indicate the reduced operating cost of the engine, a tree to indicate the engine is eco friendly, etc).

If you need help figuring out how and when to use 2D vs 3D animation for your project, send us a message and our team will work with you to develop a plan that makes cost efficient use of 2D and 3D animation for your next video project.

2). Script

2d computer animation script

Now that the production agreement and payment are taken care of, it’s time to write the script for your 2D computer animation. Video Igniter’s writers will send you questions or meet with you virtually to learn:

  • What do you want to communicate in your animation?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • What problems do they experience?
  • What do you want your audience to do when they’re done watching your animation?

Our scriptwriters will use this information to craft a script that conveys your key messages to your target audience in a way that resonates with them. Then, you will receive a digital copy of the first draft of the script to review with your team. We invite you to add your comments directly on the script document.

Once you’ve finished adding your notes, our writers will integrate your feedback and then send you the 2nd draft of the script to review and approve. If additional edits are needed, we’ll continue to work with you to revise and polish your script until you love it.

3). Storyboard

2d computer animation storyboard

Next, we turn your script into a storyboard. The storyboard functions like a blueprint for your 2D computer animation. Each page includes:

  • A sentence from your script.
  • A mockup of the scene.
  • Directions that explain how elements will move in the scene.

When you review the storyboard, there are two main types of feedback we’re looking for:

  1. Do the visual storytelling elements enhance the viewers’ understanding of your key messages?
  2. Are there key visual details we need to include that aren’t currently documented in the storyboard?

If we’re missing details, please let us know and we’ll include photos or video references for the illustrators so they have a clear understanding of the details they need to include when they create art for your 2D computer animation.

After you share your feedback, we’ll revise the storyboard according to your feedback and then share the 2nd draft with you to review and approve. If additional edits are needed, let us know and we’ll continue to work with you to polish the storyboard until it’s perfect.

4). Illustrations

Now that the storyboard is approved, it’s time to create the 2D illustrations for your animation.

2d computer animation concept art

Video Igniter’s art director will review your brand guidelines and any style references you may have provided. Then, they’ll select a few important scenes from your storyboard and use those to create different styles of concept art.

When you share feedback about the concept art, please share your honest thoughts about what you like and dislike about each concept. This will help the art director revise and polish your favorite concept until it’s perfect.

Once the concept art is locked in, the art director will oversee the creation of all of the custom illustrations for your 2D computer animation. You will get an opportunity to review all the art and request edits before we animate your video.

5). VoiceOver

voiceover

You will receive a selection of voiceover auditions to listen to. Let us know which person is your favorite and then we’ll hire them to record the full narration for your 2D computer animation. We’ll share the recording with you so you can listen to it and let us know if there are any parts you want to get rerecorded before we use it to make your video.

6). Soundtrack

voiceover

You will also receive a selection of soundtrack options to review. Let us know which one is your favorite and we’ll take care of acquiring the appropriate usage rights so we can legally use the music when we create your 2D computer animation.

7). Animation

Now that everything is approved, it’s time to create your 2D computer animation!

2d computer animation

Video Igniter’s animators will line up the illustrations with the voiceover. Then the animators will animate each scene in sync with the voiceover.

You will receive a link to download a digital copy of your 2D computer animation. We recommend you preview the animation with your internal team and members of your target audience so you can collect a wide range of feedback. After you consolidate the revision requests, send them our way and we’ll use them to create the 2nd draft of your animation.

Once the animation is approved, our sound team will take an extra day or two to add subtle sound effects and to balance the audio levels between the sound effects, voiceover and soundtrack.

Upon final approval of the 2D computer animation, you will receive the final invoice for your project. After payment is complete, you will receive a link to download the unwatermarked version of your 2D computer animation.

What is hand drawn animation?

hand drawn animation illustrator

Hand drawn animation is a style of animation that’s created by individually drawing motion design details for each frame in the video. Modern computer animation enables animators to use software to automatically add motion design to illustrations which speeds up the production process. Hand drawn animation requires more time to create all of the individual frames with humans which leads to a more natural looking motion design.

Often times, hand drawn animation is now done on a computer. Even though the art may not look like it was drawn on pencil and paper, the individual movement of characters or elements in each scene can be drawn in frame by frame to create realistic organic movements.

Hand drawn animation is also referred to as “Traditional Animation,” “Frame by Frame Animation” and “Cel-Animation.”

How can I make a hand drawn animation with Video Igniter?

When you’re ready to create a hand drawn animation, Video Igniter will guide you through these 7 steps to create your dream video:

1). Get A Quote

Before production begins, let’s get in touch to discuss your video project and goals (send us a message or schedule a call). Video Igniter’s production team will work with you virtually to learn about the hand drawn animation you want us to create. Once we agree to the scope for the project, we will develop a budget and a production timeline to make your video.

hand drawn animation quote

You will receive a production agreement to sign and an invoice for the first 50% of your production budget.

2). Script

hand drawn animation script

After we receive your signed production agreement and the first half of your production budget, our writers will meet with you virtually to learn more about what you want to communicate in your hand drawn animation. We like to ask the following types of questions:

  • What are the key messages you want to include in your animation?
  • What do you want us to show in your animation?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • What problems do they experience?
  • What do you want viewers to do when they’re done watching your animation?

From there, we’ll develop the first draft of your video’s script. You will receive a digital copy of the script which you can review with your team. Add your feedback directly on the script document and let us know when everyone has finished adding their notes. Then, our writers will revise your script and share the 2nd draft with you to review and approve.

If additional edits are needed, we will continue to work with you to revise and polish your script until it’s perfect.

3). Storyboard

hand drawn animation storyboard

Following the approval of your script, our storyboard artists will turn your script into a storyboard. The storyboard functions like a blueprint of your hand drawn animation. It’s essentially a rough draft of your entire animation. Each page of the storyboard includes:

  • A sentence from your script.
  • A rough sketch of the scene.
  • Instructions that explain how elements will move in the scene.

You will receive a digital copy of the storyboard to review with your team. We recommend focusing on the visual storytelling elements we developed. Do the visual storytelling elements help the viewer understand the key messages in your script? Are there key visual details we need to show that aren’t currently included in the storyboard?

Add your feedback directly on the storyboard and let us know when you’ve finished adding your notes. Our sketch artists will integrate your edits and then share the 2nd draft of the storyboard for you to review and sign off. If additional edits are needed, we’ll continue to work with you to polish your storyboard until you love it.

4). VoiceOver

voiceover

Once your storyboard is approved, we’ll begin working on the voiceover, soundtrack and illustrations for your hand drawn animation.

For starters, you will receive a selection of voiceover auditions for your animation. Give them a listen and let us know which voiceover artist is your favorite. We’ll hire that person to record the full voiceover for your animation and acquire the appropriate license(s) for the recording so we can legally use it when we make your hand drawn animation.

When the recording is ready, you will receive a link to give it a listen. Let us know if there are any parts you’d like to revise and we’ll coordinate with the voiceover artist to get those parts rerecorded.

5). Soundtrack

soundtrack

Our team will hand pick a selection of songs that we can use in your hand drawn animation to enhance the presentation of key moments in your video. Give the music a listen and let us know which option is your favorite.

We’ll take care of acquiring the appropriate license(s) so we can legally use the music when we make your animation.

6). Illustrations

Creating illustrations for a hand drawn animation is one of the longest phases of the production process. To get things started, our art director will review your brand guidelines and any visual style references you may have shared.

hand drawn animation concept art

From there, the art director will select a few scenes from your storyboard and use them to develop multiple pieces of concept art.

When you receive the concepts, give them a thoughtful and honest review. Let the art director know what you like and dislike about each visual concept. This way, the art director can work with you to revise and polish your favorite visual concept until it’s perfect!

After you sign off on the concept art, the art director will lead the illustration team while they create art for all of the key frames in your hand drawn animation. You will get an opportunity to review all of the art and request edits before we proceed to create the full animation.

7). Animation

hand drawn animation animator

Now that everything is approved, it’s time to create your hand drawn animation. Video Igniter’s illustrators and animators will line up all of the key illustrations for your video so they match up with the timing of the voiceover. Then, the artists will create all of the remaining illustrations that happen in between the key frames. Creating all of these in between illustrations is what makes your animation come to life.

When the first draft is ready, you will receive a link to download a watermarked copy of your hand drawn animation. Give the animation a thorough review with your internal team and members of your target audience.

Collect everyone’s revision notes and send them to us. We’ll integrate your revisions and render out the 2nd draft of your hand drawn animation. If additional edits are needed, let us know and we’ll take care of them.

After you approve the animation, our sound team will take an extra day or two to add subtle sound effects to your animation.  They’ll also spend a little time balancing the audio levels so the music, voiceover and sound effects all sound loud and clear.

At this point, you will receive the final invoice for your hand drawn animation. After the invoice is paid, you will receive a link to download the final, unwatermarked version of your animation.

How much does it cost to make a hand drawn animation?

hand drawn animation cost

Hand drawn animations typically cost between $7,500-$25,000 to create each minute of video content. To put that into perspective, modern 2D computer animation usually costs $1,750-$7,500 to create each minute of video content.

The difference in price is due to the large number of hours required to create hand drawn animations. This style of animation requires more time and more illustrators to create each individual frame that’s used in the video. Modern 2D animation takes less time to produce because computer animation software can be used to speed up the process of animating all the elements that move.

Animation Budget

Animation Budget

Are you planning an animation project and need to figure out the animation budget before picking an animator or a studio for your project? You’re in the right place! Video Igniter’s comprehensive guide to animation budgets will break things down so you can estimate the budget for your next project.

In this guide, we’ll explain:

  • How to estimate your animation budget (pay by the hour vs flat rate projects).
  • What it costs to create each deliverable for your animation.
  • Tips to save 10%-25% or more off your production budget.

Let’s dive in!

How To Estimate Your Animation Budget

TL;DR: Most animations cost between $1,750-$7,500 to create each minute of video. You get what you pay for – the higher the budget, the better the production quality will be.

estimate your animation budget

Estimate Your Animation Budget: Pay By The Hour

Some animators and animation studios exclusively work by the hour. This payment method may save you money in the long run if you aren’t prone to asking for multiple rounds of revisions. Most 2D animators charge between $15-$50/hour. Advanced animators doing high end projects can charge between $50-$90/hour. Specialty animators that focus on 3D animation, special effects and technical animations can charge $75-$150/hour.

In general, it takes 1 animator between 25-12o hours to create a single minute of animation (2D or 3D). This includes the time to create the script, storyboard, voiceover, custom illustrations, music and animation.

animation budget by the hour

Estimate Your Animation Budget: Flat Rate Projects

It’s becoming more common for animators and animation studios to calculate your animation budget as a flat rate for the whole project. Typically, 2-3 rounds of revisions are included in the price. This is a great option because it minimizes the odds of overspending on your animation budget.

Most studios charge between $1,750-$7,500 to create 60-seconds worth of 2D animation and between $5,000-$25,000 for 60-seconds worth of 3D animation.

How Much Does It Cost To Create Each Deliverable For Your Animation?

animation budget cost

This budget breakdown will show you how much it costs to create each piece of your animation:

Script Budget

Script writing costs average out to $500 to create a script that’s 60-seconds long. If your animation is only 30-seconds long, then the animation budget for your video’s script will be somewhere around $250.

Storyboard Budget

Same story and numbers for creating the storyboard for your animation – it’s $500 to create a storyboard for a 60-second animation. If your animation is 2.5 minutes long, your storyboard will cost $1,250 to create.

VoiceOver Budget

Recording a voiceover for your animation can cost as little as $10 but it’s more common for a quality voiceover to cost between $50-$100 to record. In addition to recording costs, you will also need to factor licensing costs into your animation budget. If your animation is created for a commercial purposes, we will need to add a commercial license to your production budget (typically $100-$300 but it can be over $1,000 or more). If you plan to pay to broadcast your animation, we will also need to bill for a broadcast license in your production budget.

Soundtrack Budget

Stock soundtracks can cost as little as $5-$25 for your animation. Popular songs will cost thousands or tens of thousands of dollars to license. In most cases, if we need to get a commercial and broadcast license for your video, this will increase your animation budget by about $200-$400.

Illustration Budget

The animation budget for your video’s illustrations typically ranges between $750-$3,000 for 2D projects. High end forms of animation that are created by individually hand drawing each frame will cost more than $3,000 for each minute of animation we produce for you.
